Give your Metabolism a Boost
Metabolism is essential to all life by utilizing the fuel we eat and converting it into energy for both our brain and body. If our metabolism stops, we stop, so having an efficient metabolism is essential when dealing with proper body functions and good health. Use the following tips to help maintain a healthy body while providing a boost in your metabolism.
-Importance of Iron. Iron assists in carrying oxygen throughout the entire body. Choose iron-rich foods, such as shellfish, lean meats, fortified cereals, spinach and beans.
-Get your tan on! Vitamin D (the new SUPER nutrient) maintains lean muscle mass, which is a great metabolic booster. Direct exposure to sunlight for 10 minutes a day is all we need to get our daily dose. Choose low-fat dairy products fortified with vitamin D and oily fish like salmon. Supplement as needed to meet your daily vitamin D requirement.
-Coffee anyone? Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant. A daily coffee habit can rev up your metabolism by 5-8% and green tea up to 12%.
-It’s as simple as having your water on the rocks. German researchers found that drinking 6 cups of cold water a day can boost our resting metabolism.
-Steer clear of “white” refined carbohydrates. Consuming fiber-rich foods is a must for revving up our metabolism as well as lowering the risk of many chronic, degenerative diseases. Fill your grocery cart with whole grains, fruits, veggies, and beans to match the recommended daily dose of fiber @ 20-35 grams.
-Buy organic. Organic produce is grown without the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, thereby creating a less toxic environment. Choosing organic produce, especially those with the most exposure to synthetic ingredients, will help keep our metabolism balanced.
-Get a MOVE-ON! Incorporating weight lifting to increase muscle mass is key to a strong, healthy, fuel-efficient body as well as assisting in the maintenance of strong bones.
-Libby Harrison, Nutrition Intern
Getting to know Libby: I recently graduated from Bowling Green State University in Ohio where I received a bachelor’s degree in Dietetics. Being a member of the university tennis team gave me an interest in nutrition because staying in top physical shape required healthy eating habits. In my profession, I hope to express to people the importance of eating what you love while still staying healthy. Lets face it, we all have guilty pleasures, but who says we have to feel guilty?
